Abstract
The posterior aortic wall motion is known to be influenced by stroke volume, left atrial volume, left ventricular compliance, and aortic wall stiffness. In chronic anemia, certain changes in the posterior aortic wall echogram are expected because of accompanying changes in hemodynamics, systolic and diastolic functions of the left ventricle. In the present study, the posterior aortic wall echogram was studied in 30 control subjects and 22 chronic anemic patients without left ventricular failure to evaluate the changes in its various parameters and correlation of them to the level of hemoglobin.
Total posterior wall amplitude(OV) was significantly increased in group of total anemic patients(T group), group of Hb above 7 g/dl(A group) and group of Hb below 7 g /dl (B group). Atrial systolc "a" wave amplitude(AV) was significantly increased in A group. AV/OV was significantly decreased in T and B groups. Left atrial emptying index(AEI) was significantly decreased in T, A and B groups. Left atrial dimension(LAD) was significantly increased in T,A and B groups. Aortic root dimension(AOD) was significantly increased in T and A groups. LAD/ AOD was significantly increased in B group. Velocity of posterior aortic wall (AoPWV) was significantly increased in T, A and B groups.
To the level of hemoglobin, OVI(OV normalized by body surface area) was significantly correlated negatively in A group and positively in B group, AODI (AOD normalized by body surface area) was significantly correlated positively in B group, LAD/AOD was significantly correlated negatively in T and B groups.
